SEYE KEHINDE AT 50, HOW HE CHANGED THE FACE OF SOFT-SELL PUBLISHING

It is a golden moment for Dr. Seye Kehinde, the publisher of Nigeria’s hottest Soft Sell magazine, City People, and his love loved ones as he celebrates his golden age on earth. Dr. Seye Kehinde, a graduate of History and Political Science from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), was born on 24th of April, 1965.
He started his journalism carrier working with Herald newspaper in 1987, though prior to this, he had been writing articles practically in the major Nigerian newspaper then such as Punch, Guardian, Tribune when he was in school. He was with Herald newspaper until 1988, when he moved to Lagos and worked with Insider Weekly, published by African Confidential. Between 1988 and 89 he was with This Week, now known as ThisDay, African Concord, and Concord newspapers, in 1990. He has also worked as a journalist with other newspapers such as Vintage People, National Enquirer, Newswatch among others. At a point, he was a director at The News magazine. Indeed, Dr. Seye Kehinde is a journalist per excellence and truly he has used his experience in journalism to change the face of the soft-sell publishing to a better one.
In 1996, Seye Kehinde decided to deviate from the hard news reporting to a soft one, by establishing City People magazine. When he started, he was focusing on people and reporting them. Initially, he did not have the supports of the people. He would not let this deprive him of achieving his dream. And today, his decision to take his chances in the highly challenging journalism profession in Nigeria, by establishing City People Magazine, has yielded positive results. He has not only succeeded in making the City People magazine a one to be reckoned with in Nigeria, but he has also been able to sustain it over the years.
Seye Kehinde has succeeded in making his brand grow in springs and bounds as well as making it the most widely read and popular soft-sell magazine to have survived the test of time in the history of Nigeria. The City People Group publications include City People Magazine Weekly (Nigeria and Ghana), City People Fashion & Lifestyle, Today’s Fashion, City People Extra. Due to his love and passion for entertainment, he has also carved out an entertainment arm of the brand, known as City People Entertainment.
Aside the fact that he has achieved all these for himself and his brand, Dr. Seye Kehinde has bred many young journalists, who are presently making waves in the soft-selling publishing. One of those young journalists that have passed through him is Mr. Seun Oloketuyi, the founder and CEO of Best of Nollywood Ventures. Seun Oloketuyi was one time a reporter for the City People Magazine, reporting Nigerian Movie Industry. To Oloketuyi, that was the opening he needed, as working with the City People has helped to broaden his exposure and experience in journalism. Today Seun Oloketuyi tells anybody who cares to know that Dr. Seye Kehinde has been a contributing factor to his success recorded so far in the soft-sell publishing.
Another young journalist that has passed through Dr. Seye Kehinde is Charles Nwagbara. Charles Nwagbara is the publisher of High Society Magazine. High Society Magazine is a soft sell magazine that focuses on people and society, and its publisher is a product of Dr. Seye Kehinde.
Another young journalist that has also tapped and benefited from the experience of Seye Kehinde is Loye Hamzat, the publisher of News of the People. Like Seun Oloketuyi and Charles Nwagbara, Loye Hamat has also been bred in soft-sell publishing by Seye Kehinde.
In the same vein, the like of Lanre Alfred, one of Nigeria’s leading celebrity journalists, who happens to be the publisher of The Capital, had also passed through Dr. Seye Kehinde in his carrier as a journalist. He is also a product of the golden man of the moment, Seye Kehinde. Also Kemi Akinyemi, the publisher of The Elite, has also tapped from the wealth of experience of Seye Kehinde in the field of journalism. The names are numerous, but to mention just few of those celebrity journalists that have passed through Seye Kehinde.
